Environment
Summit has incorporated work procedures throughout it's operations
based on the Environmental Management System requirements
of our ISO 14001 certified clients. We are proud to have worked
together with mills in their quest for ISO 14001 certification,
and consider ourselves leaders in the industry.
Pre-block Assessment
A trained employee conducts a Pre-block Assessment two days
prior to planting any area. This assessment documents environmental
and safety concerns including:
- Water ways;
- Road condition;
- Unclear block or seed lot boundaries;
- Danger trees; and,
- Ergonomic issues such as hard clay or
rocky ground.
These assessments are reviewed with the foreperson
and supervisor prior to work being done and strategies are
developed to deal with identified problems.
Operation Protocols
When planting is taking place, the following environmental
procedures are followed:
- Planters know their specific locations
on a map at all times to ensure they are planting the correct
seed lots in the correct areas;
- Planters know where to find a map if they
are disoriented; and,
- Planters know to 'stop and ask' if they
are unsure.
Post-Planting Block Reports
At the conclusion of our work on a block, a Block Report is
completed and submitted. Block Reports include:
- Block tree numbers broken out by seed
lot;
- Block maps that outline seed lot distribution;
- Planting start and finish dates; and,
- Concerns that may have some future environmental
impact.
